The original poster (OP), u/EmilyandPaige, shared their story to the popular Reddit forum r/AmITheA**hole, earning 8,700 upvotes and 700 comments for their post, “AITA for leaving my sister and her husband in the rain?”
The OP opens by saying they’re the significant other of food influencer, “Emily.” Though Emily doesn’t do catering, she enjoys cooking for friends and family. So, when OP’s sister, “Paige,” asked if Emily would cook for her dinner party, Emily was happy to. Paige paid Emily half of the amount the two agreed upon, and said she would pay the remainder of the bill after the party.
Emily worked for days—not just preparing and cooking meals, but cleaning Paige’s home to make sure the dinner was “perfect.” However, things started to go off the rails when the guests arrived two hours before Emily had planned.
At this point, Paige’s husband started bragging to their friends about the “exotic maid” who was working the event, and how she was “obedient,” but it was difficult to understand her due to her “accent,” the OP wrote. The house is open-plan, so even though Emily was stuck in the kitchen, she could hear every word. She left as soon as she was done to get out of the awkward situation.
The OP was enraged when they heard about how Paige’s husband treated Emily, and demanded an apology from Paige and her husband. Not only did they refuse, but they haven’t paid the rest of the money they owe Emily. All of their calls have been ignored, and until a couple of days ago, OP assumed that they had blocked them on all platforms.
However, OP found out that they had not actually blocked Emily. Two hours after Emily posted a video about a new creation, Paige and her husband showed up at their door, asking to come in. Thinking they were there to apologize, OP opened the door a crack, only for Paige to disabuse them of that notion.
“Paige mentioned how she saw Emily’s post and wanted to come try it for herself. I was stunned. Not only was I disappointed in them for not apologising or paying Emily, I was shocked by the ridiculousness of their thought process; they would show up for free food like nothing happened (ignoring the fact that Emily doesn’t upload her content on the same day she makes it.),” OP wrote.
OP again asked for an apology, and they again refused. They closed the door on the couple, who stayed there in a rainstorm for nearly an hour, calling for Emily to let them try her new recipe. Not just that, but afterward, Paige’s husband called OP to blame them for getting Paige sick for standing out in the rain.
While, despite “common knowledge,” it’s impossible to catch a cold from standing out in the rain. The myth likely came from the fact that some cold viruses do better in lower temperatures, according to the University of Texas. That said, WeatherSTEM.com points out that rain can cause bacteria and viruses in the ground to become airborne, making it easier for them to potentially infect someone.
The biggest problem comes after the rain, the Mayo Clinic points out. Though usually water will evaporate after a light or normal rain, during a heavy rain or flood, there can be too much water to evaporate, resulting in standing water. Mosquitoes breed in standing water and carry a number of viruses, including malaria, West Nile Virus and encephalitis. In addition, standing water can also contain sewage or other chemicals, making it dangerous.
The OP’s fellow Redditors were similarly shocked at Paige and her husband’s entitlement.
“[Not the Ahole]. This is what I like to call ‘fk around and find out’. They were rude the whole way through. You should also take them to small claims court where they [will] be forced to pay up the remainder of what’s owed, though you may want to go to a legal subreddit or a lawyer to see what you can do,” u/dinodanny1 wrote in the top-rated comment with 10,300 upvotes. OP added in a reply that Emily didn’t think it was “worth it” to go the legal route.
“Also, like OP didn’t do anything to them. They decided to come over while it was raining. They chose not to bring an umbrella or rain coat. They assumed OP would feel sorry for them and let them in. But they had every option to go home. This is 100% on them. Op even offered to let them come inside if they apologized. Like in no way is OP or Emily to blame here,” u/Runkysaurus wrote.
“Emily should make a ‘storytime: nightmare gig’ type of post not naming folks but publicly sharing what happened since they still checking their socials. Let them read the comments of people calling them names,” u/GlitterDoomsday suggested.
“[Not the A**hole]. Karma got Paige sick. Hopefully karma convinces Paige to become a human being,” u/Impossible-Pause3788 wrote.
