And he also could be the team’s next manager, at least according to some media accounts.
Biggio is a special assistant to general manager Jeff Luhnow, but he lacks coaching and managerial experience. Mets skipper Terry Collins, however, thinks Biggio has what it takes to run a big-league team.
“I always told him, ‘one of these days you’ll be managing in the big leagues,’” Collins, who managed Biggio in the mid-90s, told Newsday. “And I hope you’ll get one of these guys like you on your team.”
In recent years, several teams have hired managers with little or no previous experience, including the Cardinals (Mike Matheny), the Rockies (Walt Weiss), the Tigers (Brad Ausmus) and the White Sox (Robin Ventura).
But wheter the Astros want to turn over the reins of a young team that could still be a few years away from competing remains to be seen.
Houston is looking to replace Bo Porter, who was fired Monday after leading the team to a 110-190 record during parts of two seasons.
GUILTY PLEA FOR BOSCH
Former Florida clinic owner Anthony Bosch is expected to plead guilty at an October hearing to a drug distribution conspiracy charge in Major League Baseball’s most recent performance-enhancing substances scandal.
A Miami federal judge on Wednesday set an Oct. 16 date for Bosch to enter the plea. The former Biogenesis of America clinic owner’s attorneys and federal prosecutors reached an agreement last month in which Bosch admitted providing testosterone to baseball players, from professionals to high school athletes.
Six other people are charged in the case that resulted in suspensions against numerous MLB players including New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez. No players have been charged.
Bosch faces a maximum 10-year prison term but will likely get less in return for his guilty plea and cooperation.
DICKEY HIT BY LINER, UNHURT
Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Dickey was struck on the head by a line drive off the bat of Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria during batting practice Wednesday before a game against the Rays.
Dickey returned to the Blue Jays clubhouse and was not injured, club spokesman Mal Romanin said.
The 2012 NL Cy Young Award winner was loosening up in left field and facing away from the plate when hit on the side of the head, according to several witnesses.
The 39-year-old knuckleballer is 11-12 with a 3.94 ERA.
