According to police, the shooting was reported by neighbors at around 7:30 AM on February 7. Onondaga County Deputy Sheriff Isaac Eames, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene, his son Troy Eames and his wife, Liverpool school district secretary Karen Eames were both seriously injured and were taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.
According to reports, Troy Eames died from his wounds on Monday afternoon. Karen Eames is listed in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital, according to a report from the Associated Press.
No suspect has been publicly identified, but, according to the sheriff’s office, investigators believe that the shooting was not a random act, and they do not believe there is an immediate threat to the community.
“Our hearts go out to the family,” said Liverpool district superintendent Mark Potter said in a statement. “We ask that you please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.”
According to local news station WSTM-TV, neighbors of the Eames family say that the area where the family lived is usually very quiet. The station also reported that a representative from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department said they were unaware of when the sheriff would address the media regarding the case. The sheriff’s department has not given any on-camera interviews about the shootings, WSTM reported.
The death of Isaac Eames is just one of several involving police officers in recent weeks. Last month, 22-year-old New York Police Department officer Jason Rivera was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance in Harlem. His partner, 27-year-old Wilbert Mora, succumbed to his injuries days later. The suspect in the shooting, 47-year-old Lashawn McNeil, was shot by a third officer and died while hospitalized.
Also last month, two deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida that were found shot to death in a rental home. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Deputy Abigail Bieber, 30, was allegedly shot and killed by Detective Daniel Leyden, who then reportedly shot himself. The two were said to be romantically involved, and police are investigating the incident as a murder-suicide.
Newsweek has reached out to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and the New York Attorney General’s Office for comment. The Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office and the Caughdenoy Fire Department have declined to comment on the case.
