San Antonio police shot and killed the 28-year-old man, and when the crowd became roused, they were pepper-sprayed, which affected the mother of the victim, whose family said she was suffering from breast cancer, local news station KSAT-TV reported.

Monday’s incident was one of the over 100 fatal police shootings reported so far this year. Nationwide, 144 people have been killed by an officer, according to a Washington Post database. Thirteen of those shootings were in Texas.

SAPD street crime officers received information about a suspect wanted for two felony warrants: a felon in possession of a firearm and for allegedly assaulting a police officer. According to police, they observed the man—whom family members identified as Kevin Johnson according to KSAT—leave his house. Police attempted to make contact with Johnson, but he ran away from the officers down into a creek.

Police attempted to stop Johnson and proceeded to chase him on foot. At some point during the chase, he pulled a gun from his pants’ waistband and pointed it toward the officers’ direction, according to the department. “At what point the officers shot, I don’t know because, again, I haven’t seen the body cam,” said San Antonio Police Chief William McManus. Authorities recovered the firearm after the shooting.

EMS arrived on the scene shortly after and attempted life-saving measures. Their efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the department.Police officers would not say how many times officers fired at Johnson or where they shot him. However, Jasmine Johnson, who said she was Johnson’s sister, said he was shot nine times in the back, KSAT reported.

“They shot my son from behind, and that’s wrong. They shot him nine times, and nobody here has nothing to say to me. Nobody has nothing to say,” Johnson’s mother, Arlene Garcia, told KSAT.

People started to gather at the site of the shooting on Monday afternoon. The crowd was controlled at first but then members started cursing at the officers and throwing objects at them, according to local news station KENS-TV.

A KENS photographer saw the crowd rocking a police car as they tried to tip it over. Officers then used pepper spray to try to disperse the crowd, and some people could be seen trying to rinse it off with bottles of water.

As an officer tried to leave, the crowd surrounded a police car and were banging on the windows. One of the police vehicles had its tires slashed. Several people were detained at the scene, according to KWTX.

The three officers involved in the shooting have been with the department for four, five and 16 years, respectively. They were all placed on administrative leave, according to the department’s policy, McManus said.

Newsweek reached out to the San Antonio police for comment and was referred to MacManus’ statement.
