Peru, runner-up in Group B behind Brazil, kicks things off on Friday afternoon when it faces Paraguay, which finished third in Group A behind Argentina and Uruguay and could be without forward Miguel Almirón. The Newcastle United striker scored in the win against Chile last week, but was forced off the field with a knee injury in the 1-0 loss to Uruguay.
Friday’s second game sees Brazil take on Chile in Rio de Janeiro. Champions on home soil two years ago, the Seleção has so far lived up to its pre-tournament favorite tag and looks a good bet to defend its title after topping Group B with 10 points in four games.
Brazil boasts the most prolific attack in the tournament and the joint-meanest defense with 10 goals scored and just two conceded and will relish its chances against a Chile side that scored just three times and conceded four goals through its group games.
On Saturday, Uruguay faces Colombia in what is arguably the hardest quarterfinal tie to call. Inspired by the goals of Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, Uruguay overcame a slow start to finish second in Group A behind Argentina and if the veteran strikers continue their rich vein of form, La Celeste remains a threat for any team.
Colombia underwhelmed in the group stages, finishing third in Group B with four points but led against Brazil for 70 minutes, before ultimately losing 2-1.
Argentina, meanwhile, will have to beat Ecuador in the last quarterfinal tie on Saturday to keep its quest to win a major tournament for the first time since 1993 alive.
The Albiceleste topped Group A with 10 points, scoring seven goals and conceding just twice and has largely looked like a much better drilled team than in previous tournaments.
Lionel Messi, who turned 34 last week, will be all too aware that time is running out for him to win a major international tournament.
Here’s all you need to know to keep up with the action.
