Inspired by the goals of Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, Uruguay overcame a slow start to finish second in Group A behind Argentina and if the veteran strikers continue their rich vein of form, La Celeste remains a threat for any team.
Colombia underwhelmed in the group stages, finishing third in Group B with four points but led against Brazil for 70 minutes, before ultimately losing 2-1.
Argentina, meanwhile, will have to beat Ecuador in the last quarterfinal tie on Saturday to keep its quest to win a major tournament for the first time since 1993 alive.
The Albiceleste topped Group A with 10 points, scoring seven goals and conceding just twice and has largely looked like a much better drilled team than in previous tournaments.
