State Senator Gary Winfield wrote on Facebook that everyone was “ok” following the incident. He later took to Twitter to explain that he believed a man passing his home was the intended target.
“A couple of bullet holes in the house but we are fine,” Winfield’s Facebook post said. “I really appreciate all the concern. The younger kids didn’t really know what was happening so I let them think it was just us playing so we had to get down low. Will keep monitoring them to see. Otherwise, we are fine.”
Winfield’s official Twitter account later replied to a tweet from News12CT journalist John Craven, who had shared the state senator’s Facebook post about the shooting.
“Unfortunately a young man who was walking by seemed to be the target,” Winfield wrote. “When they started shooting it appears he ran toward my home to get away drawing the fire in our direction. This apparently is when our home was hit several times.”
Police are investigating the shooting at Winfield’s home. In an earlier Facebook post, the state senator had simply written: “Thank you lord.” That was met with a flurry of responses from users expressing concern for him and his family.
In response to one comment, Winfield said of the incident: “It wasn’t related to politics.”
Winfield’s Facebook post saying that nobody had been hurt in the shooting had garnered more than 100 comments as of early Tuesday morning expressing support for the state senator, with many offering prayers.
Winfield is a Democrat who represents the state’s 10th district, covering the communities of New Haven and West Haven, and he serves as chief deputy majority leader in the Democrat-controlled Connecticut State Senate.
Newsweek has asked Winfield’s office for comment.
On Monday night, a shooting in Hartford, Connecticut, left one person dead and three injured. Police said the incident was apparently a drive-by shooting involving multiple shooters inside the vehicle. It took place at the intersection Bedford Street and Mather Street.
There were a series of unrelated shootings in Connecticut in March this year that left seven people dead and two others wounded over the course of five days.
