Senate Republicans have decided not to strip Durenberger of his seniority and committee posts. He will encounter his toughest test in Minnesota, where constituents are likely to renew calls for his resignation. If he remains in office, he will have four years to salvage his reputation before facing a re-election campaign.
Frank’s case, which goes to the full House this week, will undoubtedly kindle a more heated debate. Conservative California Rep. William Dannemeyer says he will move for expulsion, but he may not get much support. Frank, an outspoken liberal who came out of the closet in 1987, is not expected to have re-election trouble this fall. He did not dispute the committee’s findings. Said Frank: “I accept this conclusion that I showed poor judgment.”
