Kessel, the sister of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Phil Kessel, sustained the concussion before the Olympics but was cleared to play. She tied for the team lead in scoring at Sochi with six points (three goals, three assists) in five games.

In her last college season, 2012–13, she led the nation with 101 points, averaging an eye-popping 2.7 points per game (46 goals, 55 assists in only 37 games), and won the Patty Kazmaier Award as the top women’s hockey player in the nation.

In three seasons at Minnesota, the Madison, Wis., native was one of the country’s most dynamic players, racking up 97 goals and 231 points.

She didn’t play in the 2013-14 college season in order to train with the national team and wasn’t able to play in 2014-15 because of the concussion that led to her decision.

She also has a gold medal and a silver medal in the IIHF World Championships with Team USA.
