The man shared his story in Reddit’s “Am I The A**hole” forum on Thursday under the username u/CandyPopss. Already, the post has received nearly 9,000 votes and more than 1,600 comments.

He explained in the post that his ex-wife worked as a stay-at-home mom during their 16-year marriage, adding that because they got married “very young,” she has “no education” and “very little job experience.”

“She no longer receives alimony from me since she remarried, automatically stopping the payments which were originally lifetime,” the man said. Unfortunately, the man’s ex-wife also divorced from her second husband, who pays very little in spousal support.

To make ends meet, she took a job as a waitress.

Alimony, or spousal support, is “a court-ordered payment from one ex-spouse to the other,” according to Nolo. “The purpose of alimony is to ensure that each spouse can meet financial needs during and after the divorce process.”

Typically, a judge determines whether or not alimony is necessary—as well as the “amount, frequency and duration” of payments—unless otherwise agreed upon by the spouses.

“Alimony usually ends if the receiving spouse remarries, unless there’s a written agreement or court order to the contrary,” said Nolo.

Alimony can also be terminated in cases where the recipient is cohabitating with a new partner but not married, if cohabitation “significantly decreases the recipient’s need for support.”

However, “other states will terminate alimony, regardless of whether the cohabitation impacts the recipient’s economic status,” Nolo added.

The man said that his ex-wife “doesn’t make enough to really do much of anything.” When she fell behind on bills, she reached out to him as a “last resort.”

“So I asked my wife, thinking she’d say okay. She did not,” the man said. “And almost immediately after, my ex and her car were involved in an accident.”

Not wanting to watch his ex-wife “suffer,” the man decided to not only pay off the $77,000 hospital bill she incurred as a result of the accident, but also gave her money for bills and bought her a new car.

“My wife was pissed when she found out,” the man said. “She lost it, and now won’t talk to me.”

The man expressed that he might have been wrong to offer financial assistance to his ex-wife; however, many commenters thought otherwise.

“NTA [not the a**hole]. I can see how your current wife might be bothered by this, but at the same time she’s [his ex-wife] the mother of your child and you had the ability to help. Personally, I’d prefer my husband not to be selfish if this were a situation we were in,” said u/mercifulalien.

“Difficult. I would say NTA though. You acknowledged your ex made sacrifices and you want to show gratitude. I would say that makes you a caring person who wants to do right by the mother of his kid,” added u/brokenlandmine.

Redditor u/LuffyTempest commented: “NAH [not the a**hole]. Your current wife has a right to be mad, but your ex-wife is the mother of your child and like you said is the reason you were able to make something of yourself. You’re being a decent human being by not letting her fall flat on her face. You said you had money to blow so at least you’re spending it on a person who is down on their luck rather than a new sports car.”
