In the second period of Tuesday’s game against the New York Rangers MacKinnon scored his seventh goal of the season off a deflection passed Henrik Lundqvist. It marked the sixth consecutive game he netted a goal, setting the Colorado Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques record for longest season-opening goal streak.
The record was previously held by Mats Sundin of the Quebec Nordiques, who scored in five consecutive games to start the 1992-93 season.
MacKinnon was drafted first overall in 2013 by the Avalanche; he is a two-time NHL All-Star and has served as an alternate captain since the 2016 season.
Despite MacKinnon’s game-tying goal, the Avalanche fell to the Rangers 3-2 in a shootout and are now 3-1-2 on the season.
