To the surprise of no one, Clemson sits atop the poll, one spot ahead of No. 2 Alabama. The Tigers garnered 59 of a possible 65 first-place votes after finishing off the first 15-0 season in the modern college football era. The Crimson Tide took up the six remaining first-place votes.

Rounding out the top five is No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Oklahoma and No. 5 Ohio State. The Big Ten leads all top-25 representatives, with seven, followed by the SEC (six), Pac-12 (five), Big 12 (three) and ACC (two). Notre Dame and UCF are the only independent and Group of 5 representatives, respectively. The SEC leads all Power 5 conferences with four top-10 selections. The Big 12 and Big Ten were the only other conferences with multiple selections, with two apiece.
