The Tigers improved to 6-0 after defeating Florida 42-28 at home in Week 7, climbing from fifth to second in the AP rankings behind Alabama and above Clemson, while the Gators slipped from seventh to ninth.
Florida was supposed to be LSU’s toughest test of the season and the Tigers passed it with flying colors.
With LSU falling behind early in the second half, Joe Burrow led his team to three unanswered touchdowns as the Tigers outscored Florida 21-7 in the final two quarters.
Facing a Gators defense that ranked first in the nation in interceptions and led the SEC in sacks, the Tigers racked up 511 yards of total offense without allowing a sack or turning the ball over.
Burrow went 21-of-24 for 293 yards and three touchdowns and reasserted his credentials as a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy.
The Tigers signal caller suggested his team had a point to prove after losing 27-19 to Florida last year.
“We knew that last year they got after us up front. Our offensive line took that personally,” he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
“I was just so proud of those guys. There was no pressure the entire night.”
Burrow has been exceptional so far this season, ranking second in the FBS in passing yards, yards per attempt and touchdowns with 2,157, 11.6 and 25 respectively.
The Tigers quarterback has completed 79.6 percent of passes this season—the highest completion rate of any FBS quarterback through the first six games of the season since 2000—and has a nation-best passer rating of 218.1.
With Burrow at the wheel, LSU’s high-octane offense has blown opponents out of the water so far. The Tigers are the highest-scoring team in the nation and average 561 yards per game, second only to Oklahoma.
Those figures make for worrying reading for Mississippi State, who has allowed an average of 394 yards and 27.2 points per game so far this season.
The Bulldogs are 3-3 and have lost the last two games in a row, both of which against SEC rivals.
Two weeks after losing 56-23 on the road against No. 11 Auburn, Mississippi State lost 20-10 in Tennessee against the Volunteers as its offense never got going.
The Bulldogs used both of their quarterbacks—Garrett Shrader and Tommy Stevens—but the duo could only throw for a combined 146 yards, one touchdown and three picks, completing just 11 of 21 passes.
As Georgia’s loss to South Carolina in Week 7 showed, surprises are always around the corner in college football but it would take a major leap of faith to expect the Bulldogs to upset the Tigers this weekend.
