Yes, we know, Marshall hasn’t lost yet. But poll voters tend to overlook and discount performance in conferences outside the powerhouses.

No matter how you slice it, Miss State and Florida State are college football’s top two teams.

That was reaffirmed Sunday when AP poll voters had their say. Rankings after nine weeks of action had the same two teams atop the coaches poll.

This week marks the debut of College Football Playoff rankings, coming Tuesday night. Pairings for the final four will be revealed Dec. 7.

Mississippi’s first loss dropped the Rebels to No. 7.

No. 1 Mississippi State (46 first-place votes) and No. 2 Florida State (14) are the only unbeaten team left in the Big Five conferences.

No. 3 Alabama, which lost 23-17 at Ole Miss earlier this month, moved up a spot, as did No. 4 Auburn, No. 5 Oregon and No. 6 Notre Dame.

Ole Miss lost 10-7 at LSU. The Tigers moved up eight places to No. 16, the largest jump after a weekend when two ranked teams lost.

Here are Oct. 26’s rankings, with first-place votes in parentheses, records through Oct. 25, total points based on 25 points for first place through one point for 25th, and previous ranking:
