The No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide (5-to-1 to win title) took over the top spot on the SuperBook’s odds board last week, and they’re facing their first major test of the season with a road tilt against the No. 11 Ole Miss Rebels (25-to-1) this week.
The Tide opened as 4-point favorites at The Wynn, but have been bet up to -5.5. If the spread stays in single digits, it will be the first time the Tide are less than a 10-point favorite since laying 8 points against Johnny Manziel and the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station last year.
The No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners (6-to-1) hit the road in the Big 12 once again, taking on the No. 25 TCU Horned Frogs (50-to-1). The Sooners opened as 6-point favorites, but that number has been trimmed to -4.5, indicating the public’s anticipation of a potential upset.
No team can afford an upset, but with the Tide’s loaded schedule – plus a potential trip to Atlanta for the SEC title game – they may be more equipped to bounce back from a tough road loss. That’s the upside of playing in the game’s most brutal conference.
Speaking of a brutal conference and loaded schedules, the No. 5 Auburn Tigers (7-to-1) have a playoff berth in their hands. All they have to do is navigate a stretch of eight games against six ranked opponents – and that doesn’t include the South Carolina Gamecocks, who could work their way back into the top 25. That stretch starts this week against the No. 15 LSU Tigers (50-to-1), a program trying to climb its way back into the playoff discussion. Auburn opened as an 8.5-point favorite, but is currently laying 8.
The No. 6 Texas A&M Aggies (20-to-1) should be on high-alert as well as they prepare to face the No. 12 Mississippi State Bulldogs – a team that knocked off LSU – on the road. That game opened at Aggies -1, but they’re currently getting 1.5 points as the dog.
The No. 9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (30-to-1) have some steep hurdles to climb in their pursuit of a playoff ticket, and the first is at home this weekend against the No. 14 Stanford Cardinal (40-to-1). The Cardinal can ill afford another loss, even out of conference, and opened as 1-point favorites.
With a loss already on their resume, the No. 9 Michigan State Spartans (15-to-1) is another team in must-win mode each week. Their home – and primetime – matchup against the No. 19 Nebraska Cornhuskers will either keep their playoff hopes alive or render them virtually eliminated. The Spartans opened at -7, but have been bet up to -8.
