The ‘Noles, for their part, have not set the world on fire, either. They’re only 1-5 against the spread after finishing 11-3 against the number in 2013-14. In fact, Florida State (5-to-1) was bumped from the No. 1 spot despite sporting an undefeated 6-0 record.
The winner of Saturday’s showdown, to be played at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, will be able to make a strong case as the country’s top team. Florida State is an early 12-point favorite.
As for now, the country’s top team is Mississippi State. The Bulldogs’ 38-23 victory over No. 2 Auburn marked their third straight win over a top 10 opponent. It also earned them enough first-place votes to jump previous No. 1 FSU. They have a bye this week before hitting the road to face Kentucky. Despite the Bulldogs’ impressive streak, the Westgate hasn’t moved them to the top of their board, slotting them at 7-to-1 alongside Michigan State, Oklahoma and Alabama, each of whom has a loss on its ledger. The move from last week’s 25-to-1 price is certainly significant, though.
The Bulldogs’ in-state rival, the Ole Miss Rebels (8-to-1), had a big weekend as well, beating the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station, seven days after taking care of Alabama. The win moved them up to No. 3 in the polls and shrunk their title price from last week’s 15-to-1 to 8-to-1. They’ll host the Tennessee Volunteers this week.
