The quarterback transferred from Alabama to Oklahoma in the offseason and has already made a mockery of the suggestion he might need time to adjust to the Sooners’ offense. In the first two games of the season, Hurst has completed 83 percent of his throws, amassing 814 yards, nine touchdowns and no interceptions so far.
Last week, the senior signal-caller finished 14-of-18 with 259 passing yards and three touchdowns, adding 47 rushing yards in Oklahoma’s 70-14 thrashing of South Dakota.
Hurst could add to his stellar figures against a Bruins team that is 0-2 after losing 24-14 on the road to Cincinnati on the opening weekend of the season, and then 23-14 at home against San Diego State last week.
The Bruins rank in the bottom half of the country in terms of yards allowed and while both of their defeats have come by an average of 10.5 points, Oklahoma’s offense is far better than that of Cincinnati and San Diego State.
On the other side of the ball, the situation is just as problematic for UCLA, which averages a paltry 14 points per game.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson has thrown for a combined 355 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, completing just 52.5 percent of his passes.
Demetric Felton has been the Bruins’ best offensive weapon, amassing 99 rushing yards and 127 receiving yards, both of which are team-high figures.
Worryingly for UCLA, Oklahoma’s offense looked much improved against South Dakota in the second game under new defensive coordinator Alex Grinch.
“We’re progressing on the scheme, but the most important thing to me is the mentality,” Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said. “Do we play with the edge and the aggression, the physicality and the fundamentals that a great defense should play with? And I see us doing that more and more right now. It’s certainly not there, but we are doing it more and more.”
UCLA is 0-2 against Power Five opponents and it seems highly unlikely that record will change at the weekend.
