The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry is by some distance the most intriguing matchups of the quintet as No. 4-ranked Georgia travels to Auburn, Alabama, to face the No.12-ranked Tigers.

Georgia’s season looked done and dusted after an overtime home loss to South Carolina a month ago, but the Bulldogs have since rebounded in style. Georgia has won the last three games, shutting out both Kentucky and Missouri and defeating then No.6-ranked Florida—the Gators have since slipped to 11—to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Coupled with Alabama’s 46-41 defeat against LSU, last week’s 27-0 win over Missouri vaulted the Bulldogs into the top four of the College Football Playoff rankings and kept them just ahead of Florida in the race for the divisional title in the SEC East.

The Bulldogs have two wins over top-16 teams and emerging from Auburn with a win would be another prestigious scalp to their belt, consolidating their chances of playoffs.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart, however, insisted the CFP ranking was not his priority for the time being.

“I think it matters a whole lot more the next coming weeks than right now, so I don’t spend a lot of time on it, don’t worry about it too much,” he said in his press conference on Wednesday.

Winning on Saturday would also give Georgia the chance to banish the demons of 2017 when the Bulldogs arrived in Auburn as the No.1 team in the country against a team that had already lost twice, only to be thrashed 40-17 by the Tigers.

The Bulldogs won’t have the same margin of error this weekend, but Smart suggested his team would be ready to deal with the raucous atmosphere at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

“They’ve got a really impactful home field and home crowd, and this is probably their biggest home game of the year so far,” he added.

“So, I know they’ll be ripping and raring to go. But when we go to Tennessee, it’s loud. When we go on the road and play in the SEC, it’s loud.”

Saturday’s matchup will be as crucial for Auburn as it is for Georgia. The Tigers have already lost twice this season and at 7-2 they trail both LSU and Alabama in the SEC West.

However, a win over Georgia would inject new life into Auburn’s season ahead of the Iron Bowl against Alabama on November 30. Wins in both games, could well propel Auburn far higher up the rankings than the current 12th place.

The Tigers arrive into the weekend off a bye week and Gus Malzahn suggested the week off came at the right time for his players.

“They treated the bye week the same as usual because they’ve been pretty successful after bye weeks so far,” Auburn coach told AL.com.

“For a game like this, they start planning in the summer. They think about it during the season but use the off week to get the head start on it.”

Georgia will be the Tigers’ fourth ranked matchup of the season, following a win against Oregon and losses to Florida and LSU.

The two defeats came by a combined margin of 14 points and there were positives to take from both games for Auburn, who held LSU to less than half of its average points per game and forced four turnovers against Florida.

While the Bulldogs don’t carry the same offensive threat posed by LSU—not many teams do—Auburn’s defense, which ranks 17th in the nation, will have its work cut out.

Georgia ranks 32nd in total offense at an average of 448 yards per game, with 232.6 of those coming through the air via Jake Fromm.

Auburn’s struggles have come on the offensive side of the ball, where it ranks only 50th in the nation in scoring offense and faces a tough task against the country’s second-best scoring defense.
