Gauff, playing in her first-ever grand slam tournament, moves on to the round of 16 to face No. 7 seed Simona Halep of Romania. They will face off at 5 a.m. ET on Monday. The court — whether Court 1 or Center Court — will be determined later. Halep won last year’s French Open.

Gauff’s win over Hercog on Friday was not easy by any stretch of the imagination. Hercog dominated the first set, winning the final four after falling behind 3-2. Hercog seemed poised to win the second set in the best-of-3 before Gauff stormed back to win.

Gauff took the lead early in the final set, and then held on for the win during the match that lasted 2 hours, 47 minutes. Once Hercog’s return went long to give Gauff the win, the 15-year-old tossed her racket to the side and jumped high into the air three times in excitement.

It took Gauff a while to leave the court, as she stopped to sign autographs and take photos with everyone courtside who requested one.

Gauff, who turned 15 in March, got a last-minute invitation to play a Wimbledon qualifying tournament this year. After winning three straight matches, Gauff got word she would play Venus Williams in the first round. Gauff grew up idolizing Venus and Serena Williams, who are legends in the tennis world.

Gauff, ranked No. 333 going into the tournament, knocked off Venus 6-4, 6-4 on Monday, and then beat Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday.

The winner of Gauff’s match with Halep on Monday will advance to the quarterfinal round to face either China’s Shuai Zhang or Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska.

Gauff, the youngest woman in this year’s draw, is the youngest to win at Wimbledon since Jennifer Capriati won at age 14 in 1991. Gauff’s given first name is Cori, but people just call her “Coco.”

Four more American women remain in contention, and they’ll play their third-round matches on Saturday. Serena Williams will face Germany’s Julia Görges, Alison Riske will play Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, Lauren Davis will play Spain’s Carla Suárez Navarro, and Sloane Stephens will face Great Britain’s Johanna Konta.
