According to Deadline, the actor died in his Connecticut home, where he lived with his wife, actress Elaine Taylor, who he’d been married to since 1970.

“Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words. He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us,” his manager Lou Pitt said in a statement to Deadline.

A prolific star of both stage and screen, Plummer is probably best remembered for his portrayal of Captain Von Trapp in 1965’s The Sound of Music. According to his IMDb page, the actor had been providing his voice to the film Heroes of the Golden Mask, which is currently filming.

Despite perhaps being his most beloved role, Plummer was rather critical of The Sound of Music, calling it “awful and sentimental and gooey” in a 2011 actor’s roundtable for The Hollywood Reporter. “You had to work terribly hard to try and infuse some minuscule bit of humor into it,” he said.

Some of Plummer’s other notable roles included Dr. Rosen in 2001’s A Beautiful Mind, Mike Wallace in 1999’s The Insider, and J. Paul Getty in 2017’s All the Money in the World.

Despite being a mainstay of the silver screen, he didn’t receive his first Academy Award until he took home the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in 2010’s Beginners. Plummer was the oldest actor to receive the award, being 82 at the time. He was also nominated for the same award for his roles in 2009’s The Last Station and 2018’s All the Money in the World, which earned him the title of being the oldest actor to be nominated for an Academy Award (88 years old). On stage, he took on many classic roles including Iago in William Shakespeare’s Othello opposite James Earl Jones and the title character in King Lear. He won the Tony Award in 1974 for best actor in a musical for the titular role in Cyrano. He won best actor in a play in 1997 for his role in Barrymore. He’s also won two Primetime Emmy Awards.

Besides his wife, Plummer is also survived by his daughter actress Amanda Plummer of Pulp Fiction and The Fisher King fame.
