Yelich’s “announcement” came when Fox Sports replayed audio of the Brewers outfielder speaking to Pirates first baseman Josh Bell before their game at Miller Park. The network had wired Yelich for sound.
After Bell told Yelich that he had accepted a Derby invite, Yelich indicated that he, too, would compete.
The reigning National League Most Valuable Player told reporters after the game (per Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) that he will take part.

Yelich was voted into the All-Star Game last week as a starter for the National League. He leads the major leagues with 29 home runs, one more than Mets rookie first baseman Pete Alonso, who also disclosed last week that he would participate in the Derby on July 8.
