The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is still underway as the United States national team took on Iran on Tuesday in a “win-or-go-home” Group B finale, and the U.S. pulled ahead of Iran 1-0 after Pulisic scored using a headed cross from Sergino Dest.

Following the goal, images of Pulisic as Marvel’s Captain America flooded social media.

“My captain America,” one user wrote along with the photo on Twitter.

“CAPTAIN AMERICA PUTS AMERICA UP 1-0,” another tweeted.

Following the goal, Pulisic lay on the ground for a few minutes before leaving the field to get looked at by the team’s trainers. He reportedly suffered an abdominal injury during the play but finished the first half before getting subbed by Brenden Aaronson.

ESPN reported that a U.S. Soccer spokesperson said Pulisic was taken to the hospital to get scans on the injury.

Despite Iran piling on the pressure in the second half, the United States took the win and advanced to the knockout stage for the first time since 2014.

Following the match, the United States men’s national soccer team (USMNT) head coach Gregg Berhalter was asked about Pulisic’s condition.

“No update on his status, but I’ve been saying all along, ‘It’s a wonderful thing when one of your best players is also one of your hardest working.’ He is certainly that,” Berhalter told the press. “I can’t say enough positive things about Christian.”

Berhalter also praised the efforts of the entire team.

“Proud. First half we showed what we can do soccer wise. Second half we showed what we could do determination wise. The guys grinded. They gave every single ounce of energy. We are undefeated going into the knockout round,” he said.

The next test for the U.S. team comes on Saturday when they play the Netherlands at 10 a.m. ET.

“We are two games from the World Cup final. Granted, we have our work cut out for us with the Netherlands. They are a world-class team. Nonetheless, we are two games away from the World Cup final thank God,” read one tweet posted Tuesday evening.

“Christian Pulisic is truly Captain America. The Netherlands don’t know what’s about to hit them,” wrote another Twitter user.
