Chris Sale just made his season debut on July 12, hurling five innings vs. the Rays after dealing with a stress fracture to one of his ribs in March. Now, he may not be hurling for the foreseeable future.
Sale exited Sunday’s Yanks-Sawx matchup after taking an Aaron Hicks line drive off his pitching hand. The result was less than pretty: Sale’s pinky was totally mangled, and he removed himself immediately after the play.

It’s another disappointing turn to Sale’s recent injury-riddled seasons, but hopefully this one won’t keep him sidelined long. Here’s the latest:
Chris Sale injury update
Sale removed himself from Sunday’s Yankees-Red Sox matchup after taking a line drive off his pitching hand. The Red Sox announced that Sale suffered a “left, fifth-finger fracture.” His timeline for return is unclear, but Sale said he fully expects to return this year.
It wasn’t a pretty sight:
Sale, though, was seen in the dugout soon after with a splint on his finger.
The last few years of Sale’s career have been wrought with injuries: The starter underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2020, missing the shortened season, before finally returning in late 2021. He would pitch 42 2/3 innings in 2021, with a 3.16 ERA (3.69 FIP).
In February, Sale was injured while throwing batting practice, later revealed to be a stress fracture. He would make his season debut on July 12, pitching five innings in a no-decision vs. the Rays.
