The comment came after he was singing the theme song to Good Times, a television show popular in the 1970s about a black family living in Chicago.
Laughing, Lemon asked Chris Cuomo how he knew the words to the song, to which Christ Cuomo responded, “You know, I’m black on the inside.”
The comment sparked backlash on Twitter after USA Today sports reporter Mike Freeman pointed to the statement alongside a perplexed image of Tom from the cartoon Tom and Jerry on Friday.
“It’s fucking offensive,” tweeted Sister2Sister Magazine Managing Editor Aisha K. Staggers on Saturday, responding to another commenter to Freeman’s post. “Black isn’t something you can just say you feel you are inside without having to deal with the racism that comes with being physically Black on the outside. This is cultural appropriation.”
Others compared Chris Cuomo to his brother, asking if the two were “competing for Shittiest Cuomo.”
The criticism comes as Andrew Cuomo faces accusations of sexual harassment by five women and backlash for allegedly misrepresenting the number of coronavirus deaths in state nursing homes.
Although Andrew Cuomo apologized last week, saying the comments “have been misinterpreted as an unwanted flirtation,” he has faced significant backlash. UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy group, called for Andrew Cuomo to resign and six state legislators support the governor’s removal amid the sexual harassment claims made against him.
Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday that resigning over harassment allegations would be “anti-democratic,” adding, “the system is based on due process and the credibility of the allegation.”
Last weekend, Andrew Cuomo’s office on Saturday directed an investigation into the allegations to former U.S. District Judge Barbara Jones, who worked alongside one of the governor’s close advisors at a law firm. The move, however, was widely criticized, with New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and others promptly calling for a more independent investigation. The next day the governor agreed to a “thorough and independent review that is above reproach and beyond political interference,” and asked New York Attorney General Letitia James to select “a qualified private lawyer to do an independent review of allegations of sexual harassment.”
On Sunday, the embattled New York governor signed a bill limiting the emergency executive powers given to him at the beginning of the pandemic.
Chris Cuomo on Monday stated he was “obviously” aware of the allegations made against Andrew Cuomo, and added that he cannot cover it as a CNN host “because he is my brother.”
Chris Cuomo, however, was previously criticized for asking Andrew Cuomo softball questions in CNN interviews conducted during the height of the pandemic when the nursing home scandal was playing out.
Newsweek reached out to Chris Cuomo but didn’t hear back in time for publication.
