The Red Raiders trailed 77-71 with 23.5 seconds left in their game against the West Virginia Mountaineers when Beard moved towards halfcourt and began shouting at the officials during a timeout.
As one of his assistants tried to placate him and redirect him towards the bench, Beard, a two-time Big 12 Coach of The Year, continued yelling at the referees before theatrically dropping to the floor and gesturing for a timeout.
Unsurprisingly, Beard’s request wasn’t granted and one of the three referees instead decided to eject him from the game. No longer kept in check by one of his assistants, the Red Raiders’ head coach swiftly sprung back to his feet before verbally laying into the officiating crew again.
After crossing into the Mountaineers’ half court to fist-bump West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins, Beard delivered another verbal salvo to the referees as several of his assistants looked to calm him down and escort him back towards the Red Raiders bench.
Eventually Beard, who led Texas Tech to the national championship game in 2019, relented and jogged off the court.
A clip of the remarkable tirade, throughout which Beard did not wear a mask, had racked up over 535,000 views at the time of writing.
Asked about his outburst after the game, the Red Raiders head coach explained it all stemmed from officials missing a Mountaineers player calling for a timeout.
“From my point of view, the West Virginia player was calling for a timeout on the floor. I could see it and hear it from where I was standing,” he said, as per Sports Illustrated.
“It’s still a two-possession game at that point. If that call is made, then we’ve got a chance to set up our press, and still have a chance to play the game.”
He then elaborated further on the reason behind his tirade, as he felt his team had been unfairly penalized during the game—the Red Raiders accumulated 29 fouls throughout the game and had two players fouled out.
“There was no message there, I just thought there was still time from a coaching standpoint, you got to fight for your players,” Beard said.
“That call sent a 90 percent free throw shooter to the line, and is going to separate the game into a three-possession game.”
Beard’s night went from bad to worse as the Red Raiders lost 82-71 and slipped to 14-6 for the season, while the Mountaineers improved to 14-5.
Despite the loss, Texas Tech remains the No. 7 ranked team in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and the No. 8 ranked program in USA Today’s Coaches Poll.
West Virginia, meanwhile, is ranked 14th in both.
