In Wuhan, China, residents were not allowed to leave their homes and health checks were conducted door-to-door, isolating those with symptoms away from their families. Outside China, policies have been a little more open to interpretation. Italy has banned all public gatherings and initiated an “I stay home” policy without enforcing a quarantine. In the U.K., all but essential travel for food, work or medical treatment has been banned and fines have been handed out for breach of these guidelines but exercising outdoors is still allowed....

Capital Economics said in a report that the virus is already hurting consumption and investment and the U.S. economy could be hit even harder by tougher government measures, such as closing schools and banning public gatherings. More than 6.9 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus worldwide, according to a tally kept by Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. leads the world with more than 1.9 million cases and almost 110,000 coronavirus-related deaths, followed by Brazil with more than 670,000 cases. The South American country has the third-highest death toll of any country, second only to the U.S. and U.K., with almost 36,000 deaths as of Sunday, according to the tally....
Around 7.2 million people aged 16 and over have reported experiencing a mental health problem “much more than usual”, according to the authors of the study. The mental health of women and young people have been particularly affected during the lockdown. The authors of the report said that the scale of the deterioration in mental health is of a magnitude “unlike anything seen in recent years”. Using a measure of overall mental health, women aged 16-24 had 16 percent worse than average mental health scores before the crisis; this differential rose to 27 percent in April 2020, despite the worsening trend in the overall average score....
Even before the pandemic began, hunger had been on the rise, with 821 million people estimated to be “food insecure” in 2019, according to Oxfam. However, in its new report titled “The Hunger Virus,” the organization suggests that as many as 121 million more people could be “pushed to the brink of starvation” this year due to the economic and social impacts of the pandemic. “COVID-19 is the last straw for millions of people already struggling with the impacts of conflict, climate change, inequality and a broken food system that has impoverished millions of food producers and workers,” Oxfam America President Abby Maxman said in a statement sent out by the organization....
Doctors of San Antonio’s Methodist Healthcare System, one of the area’s largest health systems with nine hospitals and over 2,100 beds, are “very worried,” noted the director of critical care at Methodist Healthcare System, Dr. Melo, News Channel 4 San Antonio reports. “We’re in a crisis,” Melo said at a press conference Monday held by doctors from the health system.
